Lee Scott Laugenour’s campaign for State Representative is collecting signatures in support of local organized efforts to place two questions on the November ballot for voters in the 4th Berkshire District and beyond.

“I support the major tenets of the Budget For All referendum in calling for budgets that serve our communities and infrastructure directly and that are funded by fair progressive taxation. I also support the Democracy Amendment Question as a step towards repealing the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling. I have signed both petitions and call upon all candidates for office to do the same. My volunteers and I are happy to be helping the statewide organizations who are sponsoring these effort. Ballot initiatives such as these together with my campaign for real progressive change will give voters additional opportunities to debate and to express themselves on these important issues with choices on the November ballot.”

The Budget For All referendum is sponsored by Massachusetts Peace Action. The Democracy Amendment Question is sponsored by Common Cause Massachusetts. The deadline for collecting signatures is July 3, 2012.

Massachusetts has received a grade of F for its budget processes on an independent state integrity index. “Beyond demanding fair budgets at the federal level, there is plenty that can be done on Beacon Hill, too,” Laugenour emphasizes. “We will be relentless in exposing and countering the back-room big-money influence that pervades Beacon Hill culture.”

Laugenour submitted testimony this year before the Joint Committee on the Judiciary in favor of S722, which complements the Democracy Amendment Question. “Our history clearly shows that the influence of corporate money in politics will get worse without a proactive and purposeful resolve to reject the ideas both of corporate personhood and of money being equated with speech. It is not enough to take us back to the pre- Citizens United days.”

Unlike his opponent, Laugenour adds, “I purposefully affiliate with a party that neither solicits nor accepts corporate financial influence in policy-making. We’ve never accepted such influence despite what the Supreme Court has said is condoned by the constitution.”
